6 Reasons Why Milk Is Not Good for You

I’ve been a vegetarian for about 12 year now but I only stopped drinking milk about 4 years ago and it was probably one of the best decisions I‘ve ever made.  I originally gave up meat when I was in high school as a sort of fad and acquired knowledge along the way, justifying my vegetarian lifestyle and then stumbled on some knowledge that made me give up milk and diary completely.

Actually, I’m technically a “Pescatarian” – I don’t eat meat, poultry, or dairy and I pretty much stick to of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and fish.  I started out as a complete vegan (no fish) but my lack of energy level and my constant craving of steak left me feeling deprived and malnourished of protein.  Then I added dairy and fish to my diet and stuck with that for about 6 years.  After a while, I noticed that I was having a really hard time getting get to a weight that I was comfortable with no matter how much I worked out or counted my calories.  Then I started to do some research.  I found out that milk and dairy was my culprit and once I cut it out completely, I was on my way to a healthier, happier, thinner lifestyle.  Here are my reasons why I will never eat milk or dairy products

1) Milk Makes You Fat Like A Cow

milk bad-2

Lets say you are a 25 year old woman (if you aren’t, pretend you are).  You are out with your girlfriends at a bar for happy hour and in walks “Lauren” from your high school graduating class that you haven’t seen since graduation day.  Unfortunately, she gained 50 lbs.  After you greet her with a hug and fake smile, you turn to your girlfriends and say “Lauren used to be thin.  Now she’s a COW!” Lauren is not a cow literally, but that’s a very common metaphor that people use when they distastefully describe someone who is overweight.  So why in the world would you want to consume the same food (milk) that turns a baby calf into a full grown COW????  Is Lauren a cow? No, but if she drinks milk, then she sure eats like one.

2) Cheese is a Terrible Food

Casein is a type of protein found in cheese.  Casein has been linked to Autism and Cancer.  And in addition to being a component of cheese, it is also used to make paint and glue.  Why would you want to eat that???

3) Do You Know How Chocolate Milk Came about?

I once worked with a guy who went to an agricultural high school.  He told me that he learned the origin of chocolate milk in a class that he had.  He said that because the cows that produce milk for our consumption are milked until there is literally nothing left, the last bit has visible traces of blood in it.  After pasteurization and homogenization, the blood is still visible.  Some genius came up with the idea to hide the blood with chocolate and sell it as a tasty treat…thus Chocolate Milk was born. Really??? They would do that????

4) Milk Contains Pus???

Peta and the National Dairy Council have debated over the years about the presence of pus in milk.  So, while they straighten that I wil stay away from milk.  Besides, there is a measurable amount somatic blood cells in milk that the FDA allows in moderation. Somatic blood cells are white blood cells that increase in animals in response to pathogenic bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, a cause of mastitis. So stop wondering why you get sick a couple times a year.  Did I mention that I get sick with a mild cold MAYBE once every two years? And I’ve NEVER had the flu in my entire life!

5) Milk Is NOT the Only Source of Calcium and Vitamin D

First of all, Vitamin D is free. You dont need to pay $3.00 for a milk carton of pus and pathogenic bacteria to get it.  You can get it from the sun.  Step outside for 20 minutes a day and you’re good. As for Calcium…here is a list of foods rich in Calcium:

Broccoli, Kale, Watercress, Salmon, Okra, Spinach, Collard Greens, Flax seeds, Red Kidney Beans, Sardines, Tofu, Soybeans, Tahini, Figs, Chick Peas, Green beans, Apricots, Swiss Chards Baked beans, walnuts, Almonds, Turnip Greens, Papaya, Kelp, Peas, Blackstrap Molasses, Rhubarb, Brussel Sprouts, Bok Choy, Muesli, White beans, Herring Fish and Oranges

Most of these foods are rich in antioxidants and are low in calories. The fact that you had no idea that all these foods are rich in calcium has one major implication. When you decided that you wanted your fix of calcium you skipped the low calorie option and chose to go with milk or cheese, forgoing and an opportunity to shed some pounds and look even better in your sexy party dress on Saturday night…

6) There Are Many Milk Substitutes

If like me you love cereal then you will surely need a substitute to pour over your bran flakes. My personal favorite milk substitute is almonds Milk but there are many milk substitutes. Click the links to get great deals on different types of milk substitutes.

Almond Milk

Hemp Milk

 Soy Milk

 Rice Milk

Coconut Milk

Now, the next time you meet a vegetarian don’t ask “So, where do you get your calcium?”. Dont worry, we got this covered (and its not milk)…

So this weekend when you go to that party you been waiting for all week and you look down at your gut and it looks like you’re 4 months pregnant, think about those two bowls of cereal swimming in milk that you ate on Wednesday morning.

If people knew what they were drinking/eating, they would give it up fairly easy. Who want’s to eat pus and blood, not me?

You’re right about it adding on the pounds. I use to eat ice cream like there was no tomorrow, and when I did I was the heaviest I had ever been. After giving the ice cream and dairy up, my weight went down, but I not only did that, I changed my lifestyle.

Very convincing reasons why one should not drink milk!

Take care,

Thanks for the comment Evelyn. Yes ice cream is a source of a lot of people’s problems…lol. Not only is traditional ice cream dairy but its also got tons of sugar, making it a double whammy.

Thank you for an informative article. I love cheese but after reading this I am definitely going to cut down. I really appreciate the list of calcium rich foods. That will make cutting out dairy products a lot easier.

No problem Laurie. I love cheese too but one day after talking to a good friend that works with doctors doing autopsies, I had to stop immediately. My friend told me that, If you could ever see what cheese looks like inside of you, you would never eat it again. That in combination with the things that I mentioned in this article helped me to cut it out my life. Thanks for the comment

Gosh, all I can saw after reading that is ewwww! Some of that I knew but most of it I didn’t – and I drink a lot of milk. Food for thought, I like the idea of coconut milk more and more.

[...] Dairy – stay away from dairy.  It’s not good for you.  I don’t want to eat what cows feed baby cows to get big because …well, cows are fat!  Why would I eat the same thing that a fat cow eats? I wrote a whole article about why dairy is bad for you here  [...]
